De dageraad van het Plastic Tijdperk
Samenvatting
Plastic behoort, samen met de microchip, tot de belangrijkste vernieuwing van de 20e eeuw. In feite kan men stellen dat in 1850 de Plastictijd is begonnen met de ontwikkeling van rubber, celluloid en caseïne. De voordelen van kunststof overtreffen de nadelen; de huidige en toekomstige maatschappij is ondenkbaar zonder de vele vormen van plastics en hun toepassingen. Klagen over plastic is als klagen over het weer, niemand doet er iets aan. De goedkoopte en duurzaamheid van het materiaal is een zegen en een vloek, significante recycling en de mogelijke ontwikkeling van afbreekbare kunststoffen is, tot nu toe, een illusie.
De geschiedenis van kunststof is veelzijdig en interessant, groot is de invloed van kunststof op het dagelijks leven, op de kunst en op het ontwerp. Zonder veel in technische details te treden is deze voordracht gericht op de beschrijving en vertoning van vroeg "mooi" plastic tot ongeveer 1960.
Curriculum Vitae:
Dr. Davidson was born in Zwolle, the Netherlands. He studied at the Municipal University of Amsterdam Medical School, then completed a residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, and a fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at UCLA. He received a Ph.D. degree at the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands.
He is an emeritus Associated Professor at Loma Linda University School of Medicine where he started the first successful In-Vitro Fertilization Program in San Bernardino County and is a Clinical Professor emeritus at the Western University for the Health Sciences.
For 17 years he was the director and owner of the Inland Empire Fertility Medical Group, a Fertility, In-vitro Fertilization and Reproductive Endocrinology clinic.
Dr. Davidson has been an avid collector of objects pertaining to the history of medicine and plastic and has studied these topics, given lectures and set up exhibits and museums for over 40 years. He is director of the Southern California Medical Museum in Pomona (www.socalmedicalmuseum.org) and curator of the Polyplasticum Museum in Zwolle, the Netherlands (http://www.polyplasticum.nl). He writes and lectures about local Dutch history and the Holocaust.
